“১৯৫২, ১৯৬৬, ১৯৭০ সাল বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাস বিনির্মানে অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু সময়। এর মাঝে কোন সালের ঘটনাপ্রবাহ বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা অর্জনে অধিকতর প্রেরণা যুগিয়েছিল বলে তুমি মনে কর? যুক্তিসহ তােমার মতামত তুলে ধর।”

“আজকের এই স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ একদিনে হয় নি। বাংলাভাষা আর স্বাধীনতার জন্য আমাদেরকে দাম দিতে হয়েছে। লক্ষ লক্ষ প্রানের দামে কেনা আমাদের বাংলাদেশ। ৫২’র ভাষা আন্দোলন থেকে শুরু করে ৭১’র মুক্তিযুদ্ধ পর্যন্ত আমাদেরকে প্রাণ দিতে হয়েছে বাংলার জন্য।
ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশ দীর্ঘ দুই শত বছরের মতাে ব্রিটিশ শাসনাধীন ছিল। সে হিসাবে আমাদের এ বাংলাদেশ তথা তৎকালীন পূর্ব বাংলাও ব্রিটিশদের অধীন ছিল। তাদের শােষণের করাল গ্রাস থেকে মুক্তি পেতে না পেতেই শুরু হয় পশ্চিম-পাকিস্তানিদের শােষণের জাঁতাকল। পশ্চিমপাকিস্তানিদের শােষণের প্রথম আঘাতটি আসে আমাদের ভাষার উপর। ১৯৫২ সালের ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারিতে পূর্ববাংলার জনগণ রক্তের বিনিময়ে অর্জন করেছিল মাতৃভাষা বাংলার মর্যাদা। তদানীন্তন পাকিস্তানের সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ মানুষের ভাষা ছিল বাংলা। কিন্তু পাকিস্তানি শাসকগােষ্ঠী পূর্ববাংলার জনগণের ওপর সাংস্কৃতিক আধিপত্য বিস্তার করার পথ বেছে নেয়। তারা ঘােষণা করে বাংলা রাষ্ট্রভাষা হবে না, রাষ্ট্রভাষার মর্যাদা পাবে উর্দু, যা কি না ছিল মাত্র ৭ শতাংশ লােকের মাতৃভাষা। এই অবিবেচনাপ্রসূত সিদ্ধান্তের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয় সমগ্র পূর্ববাংলা। বাঙালি ঘােষণা করেছিল, সকল মাতৃভাষাই সমান মর্যাদা লাভের অধিকারী। তাই উর্দুর সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বাংলাকেও দিতে হবে রাষ্ট্রভাষার মর্যাদা। কিন্তু পাকিস্তানি শাসকগােষ্ঠী বাঙালির ন্যায্য দাবি নস্যাৎ করার জন্যে আন্দোলনরত ছাত্রজনতার ওপর গুলি চালায়। এতে শহিদ হন সালাম, বরকত, রফিক, জব্বারসহ আরও অনেকে। আন্দোলন আরও প্রচণ্ড হয়, গর্জে ওঠে সারা বাংলা। আতঙ্কিত সরকার বাধ্য হয়ে বাংলাকে অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়।
১৯৬৬ সাল বাঙালি জাতির জন্য একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অধ্যায়। কারণ ১৯৬৬ সালের ৫ ও ৬ ফেব্রুয়ারি লাহোর অনুষ্ঠিত এক সম্মেলনে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবর রহমান ৬ দফা দাবি পেশ করেন। সেই সময়ে পূর্ব বাংলার জনগণের প্রতি পাকিস্তান রাষ্ট্রের অবহেলা আর বৈষম্য চরমে উঠে যায়। যার বিরুদ্ধে বঙ্গবন্ধু ৬ দফা দাবি পেশ করেন।
১৯৬৯ সালে আইয়ুব খান প্রেসিডেন্ট পদ ছেড়ে দিলে ইয়াহিয়া খান উক্ত পদে আসীন হন। তিনি এক ঘোষণায় পাকিস্তানে সাধারণ নির্বাচনের পরিশ্রুতি দিলে তা আর অনুষ্ঠিত হয় নি। পরবর্তীতে ১৯৭০ সালে ৭ ই ডিসেম্বর সর্বপ্রথম সাধারণ নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। উক্ত নির্বাচনে আওয়ামী লীগ ১৬২ টি আসনের মধ্যে ১৬০ টি আসনে জয় লাভ করে। এই জয়ের মাধ্যমেই আওয়ামী লীগ এককভাবে সরকার গঠন করে এবং ৬ দফার পক্ষে গণরায় লাভ করে।
১৯৫২, ১৯৬৬ ও ১৯৭০ সালের তিনটি ঘটনাই বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার পিছনে মন্ত্র হিসেবে কাজ করেছে। তবে আমি মনে করি ১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলন বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা অর্জনের জন্য অধিকতর প্রেরণা জুগিয়েছিল। কারণ, ১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলনের মাধ্যমে আমরা বাংলাকে রাষ্ট্রভাষা হিসেবে পেয়েছি। নিজের ইতিহাস, ঐতিহ্য, ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতি নিয়ে পূর্ব বাংলার বাঙালি এবং অন্যান্য জনগােষ্ঠী মাথা উঁচু করে দাঁড়ানাের সাহস ও আত্মপ্রত্যয় খুঁজে পায়। ১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলনের পর পঞ্চাশের দশকব্যাপী ছিল বাঙালিদের আত্মনিয়ন্ত্রণ অধিকার প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রস্তুতিকাল। ভাষা আন্দোলন পরবর্তীকালে সকল রাজনৈতিক আন্দোলনের অনুপ্রেরণা জুগিয়েছিল। এ আন্দোলন এ দেশের মানুষকে তাদের অধিকার সম্পর্কে সচেতন করে তােলে। বাঙালিদের মধ্যে ঐক্য ও স্বাধীনতার চেতনা জাগিয়ে তােলে। পাকিস্তানি শাসনপর্বে এটি বাঙালিদের জাতীয় মুক্তির প্রথম আন্দোলন। বাঙালি জাতীয়তাবাদের বিকাশে ভাষা আন্দোলন সকলকে ঐক্যবদ্ধ করে। নিজস্ব জাতিসত্তা সৃষ্টিতে ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতির সম্পর্ক এবং গুরুত্ব পূর্ব বাংলার মানুষের কাছে অধিকতর স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে। বাঙালি হিসেবে নিজেদের আত্মপরিচয়ে রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি, শিক্ষা, সংস্কৃতি গড়ে তােলার গুরুত্ব উপলব্ধি করতে থাকে। ভাষাকেন্দ্রিক এই ঐক্যই জাতীয়তাবাদের মূল ভিত্তি রচনা করে, যা পরবর্তী সময়ে স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ রাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠায় গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে।”
